Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker said he’s having trouble finding someone to transport prisoners. Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter said he and Walker talked about the matter, and he said when a deputy has to do a transport, it leaves them short-handed.
“I have two deputies on patrol right now,” Walker said. “It’s hard to find people to do transports, and a deputy said during one transport, someone kicked the glass out of the back window.
Carpenter asked, “Can we get [Constable] Joe [Holman] to transport them?”
“No, Joe can’t do it because he’s a retired employee,” Rogan Jackson said.
Holman is officially retired, but he can serve in his elected capacity as Northern District Constable.
Walker said there may have to do a special called meeting about the matter.
“We just need more transport officers,” he said.
Walker also said, with what’s happening at Parchman, it’s a good opportunity to raise the rate to house an inmate.
“The warden [Brandon Smith] and I have talked about it, and we want to go from $23 to $29,” he said. Walker said there are other facilities where the rates are higher, and they believe it’s a fair rate.
“MDOC called and asked if we could house some prisioners for them,” he said. “What they did at Issaquena was they took an office space, like a double-wide trailer, and turned it into a mobile unit.”
Walker said he and Smith want to do the same thing at Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
“Thirty dollars a head is a big plus,” Walker said. “If anyone knows of an office space we can get, just let us know.”
“You know, with that consolidation that happened in Montgomery County, there’s probably some at the campus in Kilmichael,” Board President Rickie Corley said.
“We can see if we can get one,” Walker said. “There was one behind the gym in Vaiden, but it’s in so bad of shape, there’s no need to fool with it.”
