WINONA – The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors entered into an agreement with the Grenada County Jail to set a rate per night for the county’s prisoners.
According to Montgomery County Chancery Court Clerk Ryan Wood, the board entered into an agreement to set the rate per night for a Montgomery County prisoner at $30. Prior to the agreement the county was paying approximately $39 per night at the Grenada County Jail. The agreement, that last until the end of the current board of supervisors’ term on December 2019, has no exclusivity clause and the Grenada County Jail does not have to guarantee beds for Montgomery County’s prisoners.
Last month, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors voted to rescind their approval on a contract with the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility due to a new policy at the jail regarding restraining prisoners for transport – something Carroll County Clint Walker said was put in place for safety and liability concerns.
On July 24, Montgomery County moved its 16 inmates out of the Vaiden jail. They are now housed at the Webster County Jail and the Grenada County Jail.
In other business:
• The board voted purchase two new motor graters from Thompson Caterpillar in Greenwood for $206,000 for both, along with a trade in of the county’s two newest motor graters. The county will pay outright for the new machines.
In addition, the county voted to buy back the two used motor graters for $135,000 each, which includes a five-year Powertrain warranty. They county will finance the purchase price of the two used motor graters for five years.
• The board approved the 2018 Real and Personal Property Tax Rolls.
• The board voted to pay $4,307 in this budget year and $4,307 in the next budget year for their matching portion of a grant for $344,574 to the Winona Montgomery Municipal Airport. Winona also provided an $8,614 match toward the grant that will pay to construct additional airplane hangers at the airport.
