The Carroll County School Board is going back to drawing board as they find a new superintendent by January 1, 2020. The board had offered the position to a potential candidate, but didn’t release the name of the candidate pending the candidate’s acceptance.
However, the candidate didn’t accept and the board is now opening the application back up and is extending the deadline until August 15 and the process of interviews, hiring and special called executive session meetings begin all over again.
When asked if the school board would have to give the contract to current Superintendent Billy Joe Ferguson, Denotris Jackson, Assistant Executive Director with the Mississippi School Board Association said the short answer is no.
“If they don’t find someone before Dec. 31, they can either appoint an interim or appoint someone themselves who they want, “Jackson said. “The law gave the board the power to select a Superintendent by whatever means necessary. Using the Superintendent Search is certainly good practice but they don’t have to use us to find the best candidate.”
She said the board also has the option to keep Ferguson and end the search altogether or appoint, but it’s solely up to the board.
