Presidential hopeful Joe Biden won Tuesday’s Mississippi Democratic Primary, defeating Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders in Mississippi, and President Donald J. Trump also handily won the Republican contest against Bill Weld.
Also on Tuesday’s ballot, incumbent Congressman Bennie Thompson handily won the primary in his congressional district, which includes Carroll and Montgomery counties, and Mike Espy will get another shot at the senate seat against Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi).
In Carroll County, Biden received 791 votes and presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders received 138 votes. President Trump received 1,076 votes with Bill Weld receiving 6. In the Senate race, Espy received 893 votes with Tobey Bartee gaining 45 votes. Hyde-Smith received 1,036 votes with no challengers. Thompson received 893 votes while his opponent Sonia Rathburn received 86. The 2nd Congressional District race on the republican side was a close one in Carroll County. Thomas Carey received 380 votes, Brian Flowers received 307 and B.C. Hammond received 264.
In Montgomery County, Biden received 937 votes with Sanders receiving 164 votes. President Trump received 897 votes while Weld received 6 votes. Espy received 1,119 votes and Bartee received 33. Hyde-Smith received 866 votes with no one opposition, and in the 2nd Congressional District race Carey received 313, Flowers received 213 and Hammond received 232.
The general election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 3.
