WINONA – Two people are dead and one is recovering from a gunshot wound following a shooting police are describing as a murder-suicide.
According to Captain Dan Herod, chief investigator for the Winona Police Department, a 29-year-old woman was shot to death in the early morning hours of August 15 at her home located at 504 Montgomery Street in Winona. Another female was also shot and is recovering from her injuries.
Herod declined to identify the female victims.
Charles McCrary, 31, of Carroll County was also shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Herod, Winona officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at 1:37 a.m. on August 15, 2019, at a residence on Montgomery Street.
While officers were en route, dispatchers advised the officers that someone at the scene was threatening to shoot another. As officers neared the home, they heard multiple gunshots.
Herod said upon arrival, officers found a female victim, who sustained two gunshot wounds, lying in the yard. Another female victim was found in the passenger seat of an SUV in the driveway of the home. She had been shot multiple times.
Herod said also found at the scene was a 31-year-old man, he identified as Charles McCrary of Carroll County, who was found shot in the head.
Montgomery County Coroner Allen Pratt stated that McCrary and the female victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other female victim was transported by helicopter to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Herod said she has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Herod said prior to being transported to the hospital, the victim gave a preliminary statement about what occurred.
He stated that through the investigation it was determined that the woman who died at the scene was shot first through the window of the SUV in which she was found. The second female tried to run back toward the house when she was shot twice.
McCrary then turned the gun on himself, Herod said.
“The investigation led us to ruling it as a murder/suicide pending the results of autopsies,” Herod said.
Two children were at the residence at the time of the shooting, but neither were injured.
Wednesday afternoon, Pratt said the provisional autopsy report for the female victim stated the manner of death was homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds. He received a final autopsy report on McCrary which ruled suicide as the cause of death.
