The Nation's Weather for Saturday, August 17, 2024
_____
NATIONAL SUMMARY
Thunderstorms can bring flooding downpours and localized
damaging wind gusts from eastern Arkansas and northern
portions of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia northward to
southwestern New York tomorrow. Any thunderstorm in Utah and
parts of Arizona could produce flash flooding. Much-needed
rain will fall in western and central Washington and Oregon
and northwestern California. No rain is expected just to the
east, and gusty winds and excessively dry weather will
result in a high fire threat. Smoke from distant wildfires
can cause reduced air quality and hazy skies in northwestern
Minnesota. Although Hurricane Ernesto will be well offshore,
unusually rough surf and rip current will affect East Coast
beaches from southern New England to Florida. Those
conditions will expand northward later in the weekend.
