Maurine Elizabeth Mattson, 83, of North Carrollton, died Monday, March 3, 2025, at her residence. Services were held Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home. Visitation was from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Cannizzaro officiated the services. Burial was held Monday, March 10, at 1:30 p.m. in Natchez National Cemetery in Natchez.
Maurine was born on Nov. 17, 1941. She was the oldest of six children born to Maurice R. Black and Thelma Elizabeth Black. She graduated from J. Z. George High School. After graduation she attended Hinds Junior College where she was a High Stepper. She also attended Millsaps College. Maurine continued her education at Arkansas State Teachers College. During a bus trip back to college she met Kenneth Eugene Mattson and decided that he was the love of her life. After Ken was killed in action in the Vietnam Conflict she continued her education at the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned a bachelor’s degree in library science. She attended Mississippi College School of Law earning her Doctorate of Jurisprudence. She returned to Carrollton and went into law practice with her father.
Maurine is predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Eugene Mattson; her parents, Maurice R. Black and Thelma Elizabeth Black; her brother, Maurice “Bo” R. Black, Jr.; his wife, Becky; and her brother-in-law, Meridith “Bubba” Tatum, Jr.
Maurine is survived by her children, Christie M. Clark (Steve) of Pelahatchie, and Travis W. Mattson (Xiomara) of Palm Coast, Fla. Her grandchildren, Ken Brewer (Sara), Christine Johnson (Michael), Jonathan Brewer, Kyle Mattson, Hunter Mattson (Lacey), Billy Ray Holly, Shane Clark (Sage), Andreas Ruiz, and Sara Lopez. Maurine had fourteen great grandchildren.
Her surviving sisters are Thelma Karatassos (Straton), Juliana Tatum, Jennie Grogan (Fred), Nancye Montgomery (Andy), and host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her friend, Charles “Chuck“ Haggerty.
Pallbearers were Ken Brewer, Shane Clark, Jonathan Brewer, Kyle Mattson, Hunter Mattson, Michael Johnson, and Billy Ray Holly. Honorary pallbearers were Andres Ruiz, John Clavin Brewer, Cole Mattson, Bennie Corley, Lawson Holly, Holden Brewer, and Charles Haggerty.
