Citizens of Winona, it is my honor and a privilege to have served as Alderman for Ward 1 for 17 years. I am excited to announce that I am officially announcing my candidacy for re-election to this position, and I'm asking for your continued support.
Most of you know me, but for our new residents, I am Michael "Mickey" Austin. My wife Anne and I are life-long residents of Winona. My family and I are active in our community, and we want to see Winona thrive. I spent most of my adult-life as co-owner and operator of a successful family-owned automotive business in our city. I have used the knowledge and experience I gained running a business in my role as a leader in our city. Working hard for Ward 1 and all citizens of our community will always be my top priority.
Over the last few years, our city has faced challenges. Like all of us, the city has experienced rising costs. I have always and, as long as you, the citizens of Ward 1, allow me, I will continue to be thoughtful and cautious in voting on how tax-payer money is spent. I base my decisions on what will benefit the citizens of Winona the most. City services and economic growth are top priorities. I believe that our new City Clerk has made great strides in restoring organization and transparency at City Hall. Thanks to the diligent efforts of our previous Mayor and Board in securing grants, we have made major improvements in water and sewer services to parts of the city. We are continuously working to secure money that will enable us to expand these improvements to all parts of the city. Our fire and police departments have been able to purchase needed equipment. I fully support the efforts being made to improve our recreational park. In the past, the recreational park has played a huge role in the increase of our tourism tax. The revenue we receive from this tax has benefitted the city greatly. Our animal control and ordinance office has also worked hard to find homes for the stray dogs and cats that have roamed the streets. We are working with WAAG to construct a new suitable shelter for the animals that are picked up. I have always maintained dignity and shown respect towards my fellow aldermen and women, our department heads, and our city employees. I promise to always do the right thing for Ward 1 and the City of Winona.
Over the past two years, I have faced some health challenges, but I am pleased to share that I have fully recovered, now only with a slight limp. Throughout this period, my health issues never hindered my commitment to serving the citizens of Ward 1. I attended board meetings using a walker and even participated from my hospital bed. My dedication to my duty and responsibility to you has always been my top priority.
In the coming months, I plan to visit as many friends and neighbors in Ward 1 as possible. I encourage all of you to get out and vote. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you and God bless you,
Michael "Mickey" Austin
Alderman Ward 1
