Winona High School senior, Hannah Stanley, has been honored as the STAR Student for the 2023-24 academic year by the Mississippi Economic Council's Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program.
The prestigious recognition took place at the Clyde Muse Center in Pearl, during an event themed "Pathways to Success" on April 4. This year marks the 59th anniversary of the STAR program, established in 1965 by the Mississippi Economic Council to acknowledge exceptional students and teachers in the state through its Education Celebration.
Selected for her outstanding academic prowess, Stanley will be listed alongside other notable individuals as part of the 2024 STAR Students and STAR Teachers. Vickie Powell, Senior Vice President of Foundations from Jackson, highlighted that STAR Students are chosen based on their academic excellence, with assessments including American College Test scores and scholastic averages.
“The STAR program encourages and promotes academic achievement among Mississippi’s high school seniors,” Powell said.
In accordance with the program's tradition, each STAR Student designates a STAR Teacher who has significantly contributed to their academic journey. In Stanley's case, Mrs. Rochelle Armstrong has been designated as her STAR Teacher.
The recognition extends to over 550 STAR Students and STAR Teachers who will receive accolades during MEC's STAR Education Celebration. Among them, the top 20 STAR Students, also known as the ALL-STAR Scholars, will be awarded scholarships. Additionally, their designated STAR Teachers will receive honors provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation.
The highlight of the Education Celebration will be the unveiling of the Mississippi ALL-STAR Scholar for the 2023-24 school year, who will be awarded the prestigious $24,000 Cook Foundation Scholarship.
