The Carroll Academy Rebels opened up district play this week with three straight wins, scoring at least 13 runs in each victory.
The Rebels opened the week with a thrilling 15-13 win over Winona Christian on Monday and then beat Central Holmes 14-4 on Tuesday. The Rebels finished the week with a 13-10 win over Indianola.
Carroll improves to 12-1 on the season and will return to play as they host Oak Hill on Monday. They will finish out the week by hosting Winona.
Carroll 13, Indianola 10
The Rebels overcame an early deficit and used a pair of four-run innings to take a three-run win over the Colonels on Friday.
Carroll scored one in the first but Indianola responded with three in the bottom of the frame. The Rebels then answered with four in the third but the Colonels scored one in third and two in the fourth to lead 6-5. The Rebels took the lead back in the top of the fifth with four runs to lead 9-6. Indianola finished with one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh while Carroll scored one in the sixth and three in the top of the seventh to take the win.
Indianola outhit Carroll 11-10 in the contest but the Rebels took advantage of four errors and six walks. Maddox Carpenter was 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Braxton York was 3-for-4 with four runs scored while Tyler Brooks was 2-for-4. Lofton Holly walked twice and had two RBIs while Hunter Grantham had three RBIs and scored two runs.
York started on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on six hits and five walks while striking out seven. Holly pitched the next 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two. Brennan Blaylock came in and got one out while Drew Thomas pitched the last 1 1/3 innings and gave up just one run on three hits and struck out two to pick up the win.
Carroll 14, Central Holmes 4
The Rebels scored seven runs in the bottom of the third and took a five-inning, run-rule win on Tuesday.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning before Carroll scored one in the bottom of the second and Central Holmes scored one in the top of the third. The Rebels then took control with seven runs in the third to take a 10-3 lead. Central Holmes scored one in the fifth before Carroll finished with four runs in the fifth to take the win.
Carroll outhit Central Holmes 10-7 in the contest. Lofton Holly was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Braxton York was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Brennan Blaylock also doubled and scored two runs. Reed Blaylock and Drew Thomas each scored two runs and had two RBIs apiece. Tyler Brooks scored three runs while Maddox Carpenter walked twice and scored twice.
Carpenter started and pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. Drew Thomas came in and got the last out.
Carroll 15, Winona Christian 13
The Rebels used a nine-run sixth inning and held on to take a two-run win over the Stars on Monday to open district play.
Carroll scored four in the first and one in the third to lead 5-0. But Winona scored two in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 7-6 led. But the Rebels scored nine runs in the sixth to take a 15-7 lead. Winona answered with one in the sixth and five in the seventh.
Carroll outhit Winona 9-7 but committed six errors to four for the Stars. Winona drew 13 walks while Carroll drew 11 walks. Brennan Blaylock was 2-for-5 with a grand slam home run, a double, two runs scored and six RBIs. Drew Thomas was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three walks. Hunter Grantham was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Braxton York walked twice and scored two runs while Maddox Carpenter had two RBIs and scored two runs. Lofton Holly and Tyler Brooks each walked twice and scored two runs.
Carroll had 16 steals on the night as Grantham had a whopping seven steals. Brooks, Carpenter and Holly each had two steaks apiece.
York started on the mound and pitched four innings and gave up two runs on two hits and seven walks while striking out five. Holly pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Blaylock pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up five unearned run on four walks while striking out three.
