The Winona High School boys basketball team cruised to a 61-16 win over Ethel High School last week to pick up its first win of the young season.
The Tigers (1-1) got a team-high 13 points from Fred Alexander, and 12 points from Ariez Peeples. Kentrell Crawford and Jemarcus Robinson had 10 points each.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 1-1 with a 40-34 setback to Ethel.
Both teams opened the season with home games against Aberdeen High School on Nov. 5.
The Lady Tigers claimed a 41-27 win as they led 14-6 after one, 19-16 at the half and 33-20 after the third frame. Azaria Small and Mikylah Coker had 11 points each, and Ariella Jones tacked on nine. Madison Keys had seven points.
In the boys game, Winona fell 38-33 to Aberdeen, which took a 26-24 lead after the third period. The half was tied at 19-19.
Kentrell Crawford had 12 points, and Peeples tallied nine points. Alexander had six points.
Winona, which played at Calhoun City Tuesday, visits J.Z. George Thursday and hosts Leflore County Saturday.
