Former Winona High School quarterback Chase Richardson has continued his winning ways at the next level.
Richardson, who directed the Tigers to a 15-0 record and a Class 3A state championship in 2023, has led Holmes Community College to a 6-0 overall mark from his quarterback position with the Bulldogs this season. Holmes is 3-0 in the North Division of the MACCC. The Bulldogs go to Itawamba Community College Thursday.
Richardson’s former coach at Winona, Joey Tompkins, is not surprised by his success.
“The No. 1 thing about Chase is he is just being himself,” said Tompkins. “He’s a team guy and is very likable with his teammates. The guys who play with him all trust him. He doesn’t play with much emotion. He stays focused on the next play.”
In last week’s 52-21 win over Mississippi Delta Community College, he completed 17-of-27 pass attempts for 345 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 32 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
In a 35-22 win over Jones Community College on Sept. 26, Richardson was only 9-of-21 for 81 yards but threw two TD passes. Always a dangerous running threat, he gained 41 yards and scored a touchdown on 14 carries.
In a 41-7 win over Northeast Mississippi Community College on Sept. 19, he was 27-of-35 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He ran six times for 28 yards and one score.
In a 42-23 victory over Coahoma Community College on Sept. 12, Richardson put the ball in the air 51 times, completing 29 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns. He carried 12 times for 36 yards.
Richardson split time at quarterback with teammate John Ford in a 15-13 win over Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Sept. 5 but managed to complete 16-of-25 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown.
In a season-opening 48-31 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College, he was 6-of-13 for 59 yards.
In Richardson’s senior year at Winona, he was 129-of-222 for 2,083 yards and 25 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He led the Tigers with 1,529 yards and 21 touchdowns on 163 carries. He was Class 3A Mr. Football and earned all-state honors. He was named the Region 3 Most Valuable Player.
Richardson is joined at Holmes by four former Winona teammates. His brother, Chance, is a freshman defensive back. Freshman Kam’ron Robinson plays in the secondary, and Tristin Purnell is a freshman wide receiver. Tyler Abel is a sophomore offensive lineman.
