With the COVID-19 Delta variant on the rise, State Health Officer, Dr. Thomas Dobbs issued new recommendations Friday afternoon.
“Due to the rapid rise of Delta variant cases and outbreaks, combined with the low overall immunization rate in the state of Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Health is making the following recommendations through July 26, 2021.” Dobbs posted on his Twitter page.
“MSDH recommends that all Mississippi residents over the age of 65 avoid all indoor mass gatherings (regardless of vaccination status) MSDH recommends that all Mississippi residents with chronic underlying medical conditions avoid all indoor mass gatherings. MSDH recommends that all Mississippians 12 years of age and older receive COVID vaccination and MSDH recommends that all unimmunized wear a mask when indoors in public settings.”
According to the vaccination report on the Department of Health’s website, as of Friday, July 9, 39 percent or 3,777 people in Montgomery County and 31 percent or 3,038 people in Carroll County have receive at least one dose of the vaccination. 36 percent or 3,501 people in Montgomery County and 28 percent or 2,796 people in Carroll County have been fully vaccinated.
For those wanting the shot, vaccinations will be available on Friday, July 16 at the Montgomery County Health Department. Appointments can be made at 662-283-3655.
The Department of Health is currently working to set up vaccination sites in Carroll County at J.Z. George High School in North Carrollton and the old Vaiden High School Gymnasium. Superintendent Jim Ray said Thursday at the board of trustee meeting that MSDH is willing to work around the district’s schedule and will hold vaccinations on days where there is nothing going on.
At Vaiden’s meeting on Tuesday, July 6, Mayor Stella Washington-Bell said she was contacted by the Department of Health and was also told that they would be willing to work around the town’s schedule to set up at the gymnasium.
