COVID got its first victim this past week as it forced the cancellation of the North Delta and Carroll Academy scrimmage.
Carroll coach Bo Milton said North Delta called and had some positive cases and canceled the scrimmage.
“I’m just disappointed that we didn’t get to play but that’s something you have to deal with in this day and age,” Milton said. “We wanted to play and were willing to play but North Delta just wanted to be safe about it. Besides not playing, we had a good week. We saw some things that we still have to work on. Not having a scrimmage to get better for the next week just hurts a bit.”
Milton has made no secrets that the Rebels are loaded at the skill positions and the biggest question marks are on the offensive line.
“We still have some work to do there,” Milton said. “We are getting more consistent and that’s the main thing. I would have liked to have seen them in the scrimmage. But we will have to wait to Thursday now. Now this year, we have more depth in some spots and have more bodies. We are able to get better looks and haven’t always had that.”
The Rebels now moved to the Tri-County jamboree on Thursday as they are scheduled to take on Madison St. Joseph at 2 p.m. and then East Rankin at 3 p.m., both Class 5A schools.
“Not playing in the scrimmage makes the jamboree a little more important,” Milton said. “But we went through the same thing last year with Winston when they canceled. The jamboree was the first thing we did last year and we had a sophomore squad last year. This year, we have some kids we have to look at. But there are a lot of teams that don’t scrimmage or have a jamboree. But I like the little tune-ups. It changes our plans a little bit this week as far as what we will do on offense but it is what it is.”
The Rebels open the regular season on Aug. 20 at they travel to former district rival Winona Christian, a team they beat 22-14 last year.
