Joey Tompkins will take his Winona High Tigers to Oxford High School Friday to see some live competition before the regular season gets started on Aug. 27.
The Tigers are going to play Senatobia High School for two quarters of varsity action and one quarter of junior varsity. They get started at 4 p.m.
“Our No. 1 goal is to get some game reps before we play Choctaw County next week,” said Tompkins, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the Winona program. “We’re not preparing for Senatobia in any way. We played them in the second round of the playoffs last year, so we know a little bit about them.
“We don’t care about the final score. We need to see some of our young faces in game action. We’ve got new offensive linemen and some new guys at wide receiver. I’ve got six receivers, but we have been real inconsistent in practice. Also, our defense hasn’t been very good the last two years, but we have several pieces returning this season. We’re expecting that unit to be strong this season.”
Tompkins said the Tigers have 10-12 seniors on this year’s team. He’s counting on them to lead the way.
The Tigers, 9-2 in 2020, will host Choctaw County next week. Choctaw is considered a preseason favorite in Class 2A. Winona is in Class 3A. The Tigers are in Region 3-3A this season with Amanda Elzy, Humphreys County, Ruleville and Yazoo County.
