The Winona High School boys basketball team improved to 6-2 with a 53-39 win over Nanih Waiya Monday night in Louisville.
The Tigers took control early as they led 18-12 after the first period. Winona outscored the Warriors18-9 in the second period for a 36-21 lead at the half. Winona led 49-33 after the third frame thanks to a slim 13-12 advantage in the period.
Clifford Lee led the Tigers with 20 points, six steals, six rebounds and three steals. James Shelton had 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals, and Jaiwain Small tacked on 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In the girls game, Nanih Waiya came out on top 52-38 as it led 17-10 after the first quarter, 24-18 at the half and 35-24 after the third period.
Za’Miya Griffin led the Lady Tigers (2-8) with 18 points. Ja’Najah Turner had eight points, and Jayla Campbell tallied seven points.
In games from Nov. 23 against Oxford High School, both teams came up on the losing end.
The Tigers played well as they fell 63-60 to the Chargers. Winona led 23-18 after the first fame, but Oxford took a 29-28 lead at the half. The Tigers fought back in the third period with a 19-14 run for a 47-43 advantage headed to the fourth. Oxford came back in the final eight minutes with a 20-13 scoring edge.
Lee led the Tigers with 24 points, and Small tacked on 12. Damariya Mister had 11 points.
In the girls game, Oxford win 55-12 as it outscored the Lady Tigers 29-0 in the second frame after the first period ended tied at 6-6.
Daquariana Wallace led WHS with four points.
Winona entertains Bruce Friday. They host Choctaw County Tuesday.
