The Winona High School girls volleyball team wrapped up the Region 3-3A title with a sweep of Humphreys County High School last week.
The Lady Tigers, 11-5 overall, went 4-0 in district play. They played Winston Academy Monday and McAdams Tuesday. Winona has two regular season matches remaining on Oct. 4 at Grenada and at McAdams on Oct. 7.
The Lady Tigers, under the direction of head coach Gunner Nichols, beat Humphreys County 3-0 on Sept. 21 as they claimed the sets by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-9. Two days later on Sept. 23, Winona prevailed 3-0 as it won the sets 25-6, 25-14 and 25-17.
In matches from the previous week, Winona knocked off Amanda Elzy 3-0, Ethel 3-0 and Yazoo County 3-2.
Winona played a doubleheader at home against Elzy and Ethel on Sept. 16, winning both matches 3-0. Against Elzy, the Lady Tigers won the first set, 25-3. Nichols played his junior varsity players in the second set and they claimed a 25-23 win. With the varsity team back on the court, the Lady Tigers won the third set, 25-6. Against Ethel, Winona won the sets by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-22.
“Those were the most complete games we have played all season,” said Nichols.
On Sept. 14, the Lady Tigers played at district foe Yazoo County. WHS took the first set, 29-27, and Yazoo County won the second set, 25-12. Winona claimed the third set, 27-25, and the Lady Panthers tied things up with a 25-23 win in set four. Winona earned the match with a 15-11 win in the fifth set.
