Montgomery County's Duck Hill and Kilmichael volunteer fire departments responded to a large fire at Hankins Lumber Company in Elliot early Tuesday morning.
The Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 3:50 a.m. Approximately one hour later, DHVFD Chief Michael D. Woods requested assistance from the Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department. Duck Hill responded with two fire trucks and six firefighters, while Kilmichael deployed two trucks and seven firefighters to combat the blaze.
Gore Springs, Elliot, and Tie Plant volunteer fire departments also responded to the scene, joining the coordinated effort to control the fire.
When asked about the total water used, Chief Woods stated that Duck Hill's usage was near impossible to determine due to the extended 13-hour operation and the magnitude of the blaze. Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department alone deployed approximately 5,500 gallons of water during their 3-hour assistance at the scene.
The fire was contained to a single large sawmill building. The cause of the fire is unknown.
