Near the end of a city hall meeting Tuesday night, Kilmichael Mayor Bryan Lott announced his intention to resign.
Despite there being two more years left in his term, Lott expressed that he felt it was best for the town and the town government for him to leave following some complaints that he no longer lives in city limits.
“When I became mayor, I lived in Kilmichael, and I had no intentions of leaving Kilmichael,” he said, “But I took on a house that’s fully furnished and it’s outside the city limits.”
Lott works in property insurance, and currently manages a farm, he explained in a later interview.
“I think what’s best for the board is to have a special election,” he said, “We need to have a mayor that lives in the town…for the board’s sake and the town’s sake. I don’t want to do this, but I think it’s the best decision for the town.”
“It’s a joy to serve with y’all,” he told the board, “and the hardest part is not serving. We get along well, and it’s been really good. I’ll miss all of y’all.”
During the meeting, he asked City Attorney Lane Greenlee when the best time for him to submit his resignation would be in order for the town to hold the special election. Greenlee said he would look into it.
While leaving the position, Lott still wants what is best for Kilmichael.
“I’ll be glad to assist the town in any way I can,” he said, “I wish only the best for the town.”
