Homeowners soon will have an opportunity to improve or replace their homes thanks to the efforts of Montgomery County officials.
“There was $3 million given to the whole state for everybody to split up,” said Montgomery County Chancery Clerk Ryan Wood. “It’ll be very competitive.”
Montgomery County Supervisors voted during their Aug. 31 meeting to apply for the 2023 Home Grant, which is funded through the Mississippi Home Corporation as part of the Homeowner Rehabilitation/Reconstruction Program, according to Wood.
“We approved to apply and authorize the president to sign all related documents. There’s going to be a public hearing on Sept. 25 [in the courthouse] at 4 o’clock,” said Wood. “That’s when information on the requirements will be given.”
The funds may be used for affordable housing for low and very-low-income people, according to the Public Hearing Notice.
“The purpose of this hearing will be to obtain citizen input into the development of the application,” the Notice stated.
Wood said residents who want to be considered for the funding must meet certain requirements, including owning their homes rather than renting.
Tangela Swims with North Central Planning and Development District (NCPDD) told Winona Aldermen during their Tuesday meeting another requirement is homeowners cannot have a lean against their property.
The City of Winona, she said, is eligible for up to $600,000, and there is no set amount for each applicant.
Winona Aldermen voted all in favor of authorizing NCPDD to submit an application for the city.
