A Montgomery County man faces felony charges in two counties, following a shooting near Duck Hill on Sunday morning.
Willie Lee Richardson, 53 of the Sweet Home Community east of Duck Hill, is accused of shooting his girlfriend at their residence, Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Tompkins said.
He said Richardson’s girlfriend, who was taken to Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona, reported Richardson shot her after an argument.
“So far, she’s doing good,” said Tompkins. “They took her by ambulance. She seems to be doing well.”A disturbance at the hospital among family members led to the need for additional manpower in Winona, according to Tompkins. “Winona police stayed at the hospital while we cleared the house, but he wasn’t there,” said Tompkins.
Tompkins then released a “be on the lookout” warning for Richardson shortly after the shooting on Sunday, when Tompkins and deputies discovered he had left the home in a 2016 Jeep Compass.
“We found the car by the [Global Positioning System] unit on there,” said Tompkins.
Grenada County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Richardson in Grenada County and charged him with possession of a firearm by a felon, Tompkins said.
Richardson had served time on a felony conviction prior to the shooting and the arrest, which led to the charge, according to Tompkins.
Deputies arrested Richardson on Monday without incident, according to a statement released by Tompkins.
Montgomery County deputies charged Richardson with aggravated assault, and more charges are pending, Tompkins said.
According to Tompkins, a coordinated effort among several agencies led to Richardson’s arrest.
“I’d like to give God all the glory for getting him found without anyone getting hurt,” said Tompkins, adding he would like to thank the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Grenada Sheriff’s Department and the Winona Police Department for assisting in the capture of Richardson. “It’s nice to have a relationship where we can count on them to help us.”
