Kilmichael Police Chief Barry Gregg has been named the District 2 Interim Constable. Gregg said during the Kilmichael Board of Aldermen monthly meeting that he was asked if he would be the interim to serve out the last year of the late Jerry Dale Bridge’s term.
“I really want to do it. It would help me out. I didn’t know that they would vote me in, I didn’t know they were meeting Monday,” Gregg said. He said that didn’t mind filling in and he had no plans on running for the position in next year’s election.
“I told them that I did not want to run for it. I love my job here and I want to be here until I retire,” Gregg said. “They told me that’s what they were wanting, was someone that wouldn’t run for the position.”
He said it was checked and there wouldn’t be a conflict of interest between him being the police chief and him being constable.
“When I serve papers, I can’t do that in my Kilmichael uniform. I’ll have to change clothes and get into my constable vehicle. And I’ll have to be bailiff one day out of the week, which is Tuesday,” he said.
Board Attorney Lane Greenlee asked how Gregg would manage the two. “I work over 40 hours anyway. [Allan] Pratt mostly works weeknights and I work weekends, day shift and anytime I’m needed. So, it wouldn’t be a problem. Plus, there a Civil Process that has says there are certain hours that papers could be served and certain hours that have to be worked.
“So, I’ll check into that so that I won’t get into trouble or anything,” Gregg said.
Also, Mayor Bryan Lott told those in attendance that people should be careful riding in city vehicles outside of city limits.
“I’ve received several calls of seeing city vehicles in places that are not the city. And I know that you have to go out sometimes, but just be careful,” Lott said. “Because my phone has been ringing and I’ve received calls of vehicle being spotted in different places.”
“If you have to go out, just let someone know,” Alderman Mark Lawson said.
Gregg said that he was out, but it was because he had to go to J & S Pawn in Winona to fix his camera.
“But, if I have to be out, I’ll log it through 911 so it’s a trail,” Gregg said.
