Demolition of the old Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center was completed on Wednesday.
Due to extensive water damage throughout the building, the EOC was no longer safe for people to use, according to Supervisor Ron Wood.
“It had flooded in there,” said Wood. “It was pipe damage.”
The Board of Supervisors agreed during a meeting earlier this year to build a structure in the same location to be used for the Southeast Winona voting precinct.
“The Southeast Winona voting precinct was in the old City Hall, but it was turned into a police station,” said Wood.
Construction on the new building is expected to begin in the near future in order to be complete before the November elections, Wood said.
Along with the EOC, the old building was being used by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
“That’s where [parolees] would meet their parole officers,” said Wood. “They were using the opposite end of the EOC.”
However, when the new building is complete, it will be used for voting and storage for all county offices, Wood said.
