There’s been a bit of a shakeup within the fire departments in the southern part of Carroll County. Supervisor Rickie Corley said firemen are leaving and are going to the Beat 4 fire department. He told Supervisors toward the end of the meeting they had an issue that needed to be addressed.
“All three of the fire departments are just about gone,” Corley said referring to Beat 5, 430 and the Vaiden Volunteer Fire Department.
Vaiden Mayor Stella Washington-Bell told the Vaiden Board of Aldermen the same at their meeting on Tuesday, July 12. “We went from 14 firemen to seven, so we need to figure out what’s going on,” she told the board.
Corley wanted to know the same. “I heard they were trying to reorganize Beat 4, what do you know about it, Claude [Fluker]?”
“I don’t know a thing,” Supervisor Fluker said. “All I know is that one day they showed up at the fire department. But, I’m not gone send them back to Vaiden.”
“Well, I want to know what’s going on.” Corley said.
“You can talk to [Fire Coordinator] Jake [Hurst] about it,” Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter said.
“But, what type of authority does he have?” Corley asked.
“He’s like the fire chief over all of them,” Supervisor Dill Tucker said.
“But, the Vaiden Fire Department works for the town correct?” Supervisor Hurst asked.
“It says Beat 5 on the side of the truck, and we furnish them,” Corley said.
“Well, just talk to Jake about it Rickie,” Fluker said.
