Members of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors appointed an interim election commissioner for District 4 during a regular meeting on April 4.
Supervisors agreed to appoint Butch McGlothin, following the announcement of the resignation of Katy Burns, former District 4 Election Commissioner, at the board’s March 31 meeting.
“[Burns’ resignation] was effective immediately upon her submittal of her resignation,” said Chancery Clerk Ryan Wood.
Burns submitted her letter of resignation on March 25, he said.
Circuit Clerk Lanelle Martin recommended McGlothin for the interim position, which he has accepted.
“He’s worked at the precincts for several years,” said Martin. “He’s familiar with working the elections. That’s a big plus.”
Election commissioners have to maintain voter rolls, conduct general elections and change voter status, if they die or move their residence outside of the county, Martin said.
District 4 Supervisor Ron Wood said he felt good about McGlothin’s appointment following Martin’s recommendation.
“I just thought he’d be good at the job,” said Ron Wood.
Ryan Wood said a special election to determine a new election commissioner for District 4 will be held on Nov. 8.
“That would coincide with the federal elections in November,” he said.
According to Martin, “Anybody who wants to run has to come in [the circuit clerk’s office] and pick up qualifying papers.”
