J.Z. George starts the Class 2A playoffs Friday against East Union, the top seed from Region 1. The Jaguars are the fourth seed from Region 2.
“We will travel to East Union Friday. We are going to play two games there Friday, and if there is a third game, we will play it at our place Saturday,” said Michael Hargett, head coach of the Jaguars.
“They are 18-3 and beat Oxford earlier in the season, and they beat some other good teams this year. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”
The Jaguars recorded two Region 2-2A wins last Monday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Leflore County in North Carrollton.
The Jaguars (7-9 overall, 4-6 in region) won the first game, 11-8, as Brandon McKenzie (6-3) worked seven innings, striking out four.
Alan Busby had three singles, a double, drove in two runs and stole two bases. Keiyhaun Wilks had two singles and five RBIs, and Kevin Favela had two singles and drove in two runs. Laike Shute had a double and two RBIs, and Colten Acy had a single.
In the second game, J.Z. George got a big game from Wilks on the mound and at the plate. Wilks (1-5) got his first win as he went four innings, striking out four. At the plate, he drove in three runs with two singles and a double.
Charlie Wilson had a single, double and three RBIs, and Busby had a single and triple. McKenzie and Acy had two singles each. Acy also scored two runs. Favela had a double, and Shute had two RBIs and a single. Criss had a single and scored twice.

J.Z. George’s girls fast-pitch softball team dropped to 2-15 overall and finished 0-8 in Region 4-2A play with a 24-0 loss to East Webster last Tuesday in Cumberland.

The Jaguars will start spring football practice Monday and go for three weeks before playing a scrimmage game against Ethel High School on May 13 in North Carrollton.
The Jaguars are under the direction of Rusty Smith, who will be entering his third year as head coach in the fall. J.Z. George opens its 2022 season on Aug. 26 at Alcorn Central. The Jags will play a scrimmage game on Aug. 19 against West Tallahatchie.

Jeremiah Williams qualified for the North 2A meet Saturday with a second-place showing in the 1600-meter run at the Region 2-2A meet last Thursday at Clarksdale High School. He ran a 5:31.
