The Carroll Academy football team has been known for its running prowess under Coach Bo Milton.
The Rebels showed on Friday night that they are a threat in the passing game as well. The Rebels had 488 yards of total offense with more than 200 passing, in a 48-7 win over Oak Hill.
Carroll improves to 4-4 on the season and will play at Lee Academy (6-2) on Friday night in a non-district contest.
Milton said the Rebels used a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense to take a much-needed win.
“I thought we played outstanding again, especially on defense,” Milton said. “We knew they were a running, but we were able to shut down their back who already has a 1,000 yards on the season. I thought the kids played hard, and that’s two good weeks of our kids being focused and ready to play. I thought we got to work on getting more balanced on offense. We had five different people catch a pass and five different people carry the ball. We spread the ball around and got a lot of touches. It was a good night.”
Carroll forced Oak Hill to punt on its first possession and then went to work on offense as they went 88 yards in nine plays. They finished off the drive as Brennan Blaylock hit Noah Beck on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Blaylock hit the PAT, and Carroll led 7-0.
The Raiders went three and out on offense and Carroll struck quickly as Blaylock hit Beck on a 66-yard touchdown pass. The try for two failed and Carroll led 13-0.
The Rebels got the ball right back on an interception by Mathis Beck. Seven plays later, Blaylock hit Drake Dunn on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Blaylock hit the PAT and the Rebels led 20-0.
Carroll turned the ball over on downs and threw an interception on its next two possessions. The Rebels finished the half with a four-play, 54-yard drive as Blaylock hit Maddox Carpenter on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Carpenter ran in the two-point conversion and Carroll led 28-0 at the half.
“I think we are starting to find our identity on offense,” Milton said. “The offensive line has gotten better and has started to improve the last few weeks. If we continue to do that and stay balanced, I think we have got a chance to make some noise when the playoffs begin.”
The Rebels got the ball to open the second half and went 65 yards in four plays. Mathis Beck finished off the drive with a 10-yard run while Blaylock booted the PAT for a 35-0 lead.
After turning the Raiders over on downs, the Rebels went 60 yards on six plays as Collin Hurst scored on a 23-yard run. Blaylock hit the PAT and Carroll led 42-0.
Oak Hill responded with its first score against the Carroll backups as they went 63 yards in 10 plays to cut the score to 42-7.
Carroll added one last score as Cohen Blaylock scored on a 5-yard run for the final margin of 48-7.
The Rebels had a big night on offense with 281 yards rushing and 207 yards passing for 488 yards of total offense.
Blaylock was 12-of-18 passing for 200 yards with four TDs. Noah Beck had three catches for 102 yards with two TDs. Maddox Carpenter had four catches for 46 yards while Drake Dunn had three catches for 27 yards.
Collin Hurst had 96 yards rushing on three carries while Carpenter had 70 yards on seven carries. Lofton Holly had 63 yards on four carries while Mathis Beck had 36 yards on six carries.
On defense, Mathis Beck had eight tackles and an interception while Carpenter and Reid Blaylock had seven tackles apiece.
