J.Z. George senior D’Anthony McGlothan hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for the North team in the Bernard Blackwell Classic all-star football game held at Milner Stadium in Gulfport Saturday.
The South team won the annual contest, 27-24, as it held off a furious rally by the North stars in the fourth quarter. The South led 17-10 at the half and 24-10 after the third period. A field goal early in the fourth gave the South a 27-10 lead, but the North posted two TDs in the period to make it interesting.
McGlothan, who has numerous offers from junior college programs in the state, finished with two catches for 71 yards. He played receiver, quarterback, running back and safety for 7-5 Jaguars this past season. He was named to the Region 4-2A Super 25 team and the All-Commonwealth team in Greenwood.
Winona High School’s Deriaun Townsend also played for the North team as a running back. Townsend had six carries for three yards and caught one pass for three yards.
He finished his senior campaign with 2,017 yards and 28 touchdowns on 209 carries. He also had 12 catches for 157 yards and three scores for the 11-2 Tigers, who were eliminated from the North 3A playoffs in the third round.
Townsend was selected as the Region 3-3A Most Valuable Player, and he was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year in Class 3A by the Mississippi Association of Coaches.
