On this stormy Tuesday afternoon, I am passing the time reading articles from old magazines and I discovered a story entitled "The Pie Safe”. The author speaks of the many coats of paint a family member found until she reached bare wood. This wood was lovingly cut with a simple hand saw, nailed and constructed by inexperienced hands in 1916. She understood why her grandmother elected to keep this rough-cut piece of furniture. Each layer was a milestone in life. Now she will watch as her daughter will add yet another layer to this special pie safe.
Another story talks about Farmhouse Kitchens and cornbread sweetness. Looking back, we always gathered around the table on weekends for the noon meal of cornbread and vegetables. It was made in a cast iron skillet with bacon drippings. Our cookbooks feature various recipes for this favorite, and I am sure it is delicious, but mama kept it simple. Oh, the butter was close by too. We often enjoyed a glass of milk and cornbread. Cornbread was one food we enjoyed then and now.
Friends of the Library are pleased to welcome author Scott Hendrix for an April 7 program at the Education Building of Moore Memorial Methodist Church in Winona. Finger food will be served prior to the noon book talk. Personal copies can be purchased following the program.
