The Winona High School baseball team only went 1-2 in three games played last week, but the one win was a Region 3-3A victory over Amanda Elzy High School.
The Tigers erupted for 13 first-inning runs en route to a 20-3 win over the Panthers last Tuesday in Greenwood. They outhit Elzy 14-0, taking advantage of 11 walks and three errors on defense.
Wyatt Boone (3-0) got the win on the hill as he went 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four walks, striking out three. Hammond Austin got the final two outs, fanning one.
Gavin Vance had a single, double and triple, scoring three runs and driving in three. Boone helped his cause at the plate with three singles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Jalon Oliver had two singles and two RBIs, and Austin had two singles, scored three runs and drove in one run. Aubrey Bailey had a single, two RBIs and scored three times, and Conner Helms had a double, three RBIs and scored once.
Tommarion Brown had a single, RBI and scored three runs, and Alston Crouch had a double, two RBIs and scored once.
Winona played at Bruce High School last Thursday, dropping a 10-6 decision to the Trojans. Bruce tallied one run in the first, three in the second and two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Winona scored one in the first, three in the fourth and one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings.
Helms (3-2) took the loss as he went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on five hits, walking four and fanning seven. Austin got the final two outs in the sixth.
Austin paced the Tigers at the plate with four singles. he also scored two runs. Danarius Robinson had a single and two doubles, scoring a run and driving in one. Chase Richardson had two singles, two RBIs and scored once, and Kam’ron Robinson had a double and scored once. Vance had a single.
The Tigers hosted Noxapater High School last Monday, losing a 20-18 nine-inning slugfest. The visiting Tigers were outhit 15-6 by Winona, which made 14 errors on defense compared to 10 for Noxapater.
Noxapater scored five runs in the third, two in the sixth, three in the seventh, seven in the eighth and three in the ninth. Winona plated four runs in the first, three in the third, one run each in the fourth and ninth frames, two in the sixth and seven in the eighth.
Chance Richardson (0-1), the third Winona pitcher, took the loss as he went 1 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs (three earned) on four hits, walking two. Helms started the game, going three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit, walking five and striking out two. Vance worked the next 4 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs (three earned) on one hit, walking five and striking out six.
Danarius Robinson had two singles and two doubles, driving in three runs and scoring three times. Kam’ron Robinson had two singles and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring three runs. Bailey had two singles and a double, two RBIs and scoring two times, and Austin had a single and double, driving in three runs.
Helms chipped in two singles, two RBIs and scored two runs, and Vance had a single, one RBI and scored three runs. Chase Richardson had two RBIs.
Winona, which played host to region foe Humphreys County on Tuesday, entertains Yazoo County in a region contest Friday.
Winona High Softball
The Lady Tigers went 1-1 in two games played last week with the one win being a 17-2 victory over Region 3-3A foe Ruleville last Thursday.
Winona (5-8 overall, 1-0 in region) scored nine runs in the first, five in the second and three in the third. Ruleville plated two runs in the third.
Emily Casiday had three singles, one RBI and scored four runs, and Olivia Swindle had a double and scored three runs. Dorothy Martin-Derrick had a double, RBI and scored a run, and Hailey Burton had a single, RBI and scored once. Makinley Russell had a single, RBI and scored twice.
Swindle got the win in the circle, allowing both runs on no his, walking three and fanning five.
The Lady Tigers dropped a 12-4 decision at Nanih Waiya last Monday. Nanih Waiya scored six runs in the first, four in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings. Winona scored one run each in the first and fourth innings and two in the fifth.
Winona, which played at Ruleville Tuesday, hosts Yazoo County Thursday and visits Amanda Elzy Monday.
