Winona businessman Chris Herring qualified this week as a Republican candidate for the Ward 2 seat on the Winona Board of Alderman. The Republican Primary Election will be held on April1, 2025, while the general election will be held on June 3, 2025.
“As a lifelong resident of Winona and a local business owner, I believe I have the skills, knowledge, and resourcefulness needed to help lead this city to its fullest potential,” Herring said.
He said collaboration between the city, county, and Montgomery County Economic Development Partnership is key to growing the local economy.
“Working together and combining our resources, as done with Biewer Lumber, is how we can recruit more industry, retail businesses, restaurants, and service providers to this community,” Herring said. “Not only will this bring jobs to our citizens, it will provide more local shopping opportunities for our citizens. This leads to an increase in local tax dollars which can be used to upgrade our aging infrastructure.”
Herring said he supports greater investment into public safety.
“We need to provide the police and fire departments with what they need to keep citizens safe,” Herring said. “A safe community is fundamental in creating a healthy and wholesome place to raise a family.”
In addition, as a business owner, Herring uses a conservative approach to spending, and he believes the city should operate the same.
“We need to prioritize our needs, set goals, and seek out alternative funding sources to provide the best possible services to our citizens,” Herring said.
A fifth generation Winonian and a resident of Ward 2 for 47 years, Herring and his wife, Margaret, a teacher, have one son, Jet, who is a senior at Mississippi State University.
Herring graduated from Winona High School and continued his education at Holmes Community College, where he was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Holmes Golf Team, and a member of the choir. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in secondary education social studies from Mississippi State University, graduating with honors.
From 2001 to 2006, Herring was a public-school teacher. In 2006, Herring became owner and licensed insurance agent at A.R. Burt Insurance Agency and a partner in Herring Properties.
He is also an active part of the community. He is a longtime member of the Winona Rotary Club, where he served as a member of the board of directors, vice president and president, and is vice chairman of the Winona Montgomery Airport Board of Directors. He is also a member of Moore Memorial Methodist Church, where he will be serving on the board of trustees.
In his free time, Herring enjoys golf, playing guitar, and outdoor cooking with his friends and family.
