A Winona man will spend seven years in prison after pleading guilty to auto burglary.
Chivan M. Thompson of Winona pleaded guilty to two counts of auto burglary in Montgomery County Circuit Court Monday.
Thompson pleaded guilty in connection with a string of auto burglaries that occurred last November and December in Winona. He was arrested by the Winona Police Department after a two-week investigation that included police surveillance of the suspect over multiple days.
Thompson was indicted on six counts of auto burglary. As part of a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to two counts of auto burglary and the remaining four will be dismissed.
Thompson was sentenced to seven years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for each count, to be served concurrently. He must also pay court costs and fees and restitution in the amount of $160, $15, and $5.
Other guilty plea agreements accepted were:
• Jimmy Garrett, Jr. pleaded guilty to a modified lesser charge of burglary of a building. He was indicted for burglary of a dwelling in connection with a November 18, 2018, burglary at 202 Emerson Street in Winona, but the charges were reduced to the lesser charge as part of the plea agreement. He was sentenced to seven years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with two to serve and five suspended, and five years on post-release supervision, court costs, fees, and restitution in the amount of $120.
• Anthony Carpenter pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault as part of a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office. Carpenter was indicted for simple assault of a law enforcement officer, which is a felony charge. He was sentenced to time served and court costs and assessments. He was instructed that his agreement is contingent upon good behavior for the next year.
• Dominique Berry pleaded guilty to robbery in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Berry pleaded guilty to robbing a woman of $250 in Winona. He pleaded guilty to 15 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with 11 years suspended and four to serve. He must serve five years on post-release supervision and pay court costs and restitution.
• Jarod Miquel Collins pleaded guilty to felony driving under the influence. He has two prior DUI convictions in Webster County in 2018 and in Choctaw County in 2019. He was sentenced to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with four suspended and one to be spent on house arrest. He must also serve four years on post-release supervision, pay a $2,000 fine, court costs and assessments.
