Romans 5:8; “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, everywhere you turn, you can’t help but notice the emphasis on love. And in a world where hurt and hate seem to stand out all too often, it is so good to see and experience expressions of love. The gifting of flowers and candy, a romantic evening out enjoying a fine meal, a simple card, text or phone call to say, “I love you,” a neighbor helping a neighbor, and even a stranger helping a stranger. All such expressions touch hearts and lives in a lasting way.
But the greatest expression of love was shown some 2,000 years ago, on an old-rugged cross, on a hill called Mt. Calvary. It was there, as the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 5:8; “…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The Apostle John writes in what is probably the most recognized verse of scripture in the Bible, John 3:16; “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” God, because of His great love for you and me, gave His only begotten Son Jesus, to pay the price for our sins. And the Bible says in Romans 10:9-10; “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
What about you? Have you experienced the greatest love of all? Have you experienced the love of God? If not, you can. If you are willing to repent (or turn) from your sins, believing that Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead, you will be saved. Just cry out to God in faith and ask Him to save you from your sins and He will. The Bible says in Romans 10:13; “for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
This Valentine’s Day, let me encourage you to contemplate and be thankful for the greatest love of all—the love of God.
