WINONA – The Winona Tigers roared their way to a conference win over area rival Eupora Friday night in Winona.
In their 35-18 victory, the Tigers had a 7-6 lead in the first quarter and kept that pace throughout the game. The Tigers went into the half 21-6, and outscored the Eagles 14 to six in the third.
“They played pretty good,” Head Coach Joey Tompkins said. “Our teams were pretty evenly matched, but I thought we had a better football team.”
Tompkins said defensively, his Tigers execute well in keeping the Eagles at 18 point for the night.
“The defense played really well,” Tompkins said. “We gave up two big plays, but other than that, the defense played one of its best games.”
For the offense, senior quarterback JaTyler Moore had a big game in the air and on the ground. Moore was 15 of 21 for 171 yards and two touchdowns in the air, and in the run game, he racked up 71 more yards on 18 carries and scored two more touchdowns.
Junior running back D.J. Ringo put up 73 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown, and wide receiver Chris Olton had two receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
Kicker Cade Eldridge successfully kicked five PATs on the night.
On defense, Kaleb Hicks, Jalen Campbell, and Andarius Coffey each had six tackles for the night, and Olton had an interception.
Friday, the Tigers, now 5-3 on the season, will travel to Calhoun City for another 2A-2 conference game Friday night. Calhoun City is currently the defending state champions and are 6-1 on the season.
