A Winona native has successfully defended her dissertation and can now add a Ph.D behind her name. Dr. Charnecca Danielle Barnes of Cleveland and formerly of Winona, successfully defended her dissertation on Friday, September 13, 2019.
Her dissertation research was on “Exploring the Development of Financial Strategies in Small Family Owned Businesses.” Barnes said her dissertation followed how four small businesses in Bolivar County.
“I discussed the different strategies that small businesses use. I interviewed four small businesses and the strategy they mostly used was bank loans. One business used a program here called South Delta that helps businesses grow and some talked about the statement of cash flow the money that they bring in and the money that they pay out,” she said.
Barnes said she uploaded her dissertation on a program called Zoom and after it was successfully defended, it was published through ProQuest.
“It had to go through my chair and my academic editor for editing and once it was approved, I received notice today that it was published. So, I am done,” she said.
Barnes is currently the full-time Instructor of Accounting and Business at Mississippi Delta Community College. She teaches Principals of Accounting I and II, Personal Financial Management and Keyboarding. She said she was recently promoted to full-time and has worked as an adjunct professor for five years.
She said being a professor has always been her dream and one part of that dream is now accomplished. Now, it accomplishing the next – being a tenured professor.
“It feels wonderful,” she said. “It feels like I can breathe now.” One of Dr. Barnes’s main goals is to give back to the community and help the younger generation in the business world.
She is the daughter of Mr. Fred Barnes of Grenada and Ms. Essie Mae Forrest of Winona. Dr. Barnes graduated from Winona Secondary School in 2006. She graduated from Mississippi Valley State University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and in 2013 with a Master in Business Administration. Dr. Barnes moved to Cleveland in December 2013
Barnes graduated from Kaplan University in 2015 with a Master of Science in Accounting with a specialization in Finance. She will be graduating from Northcentral University on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020 at Phoenix, Arizona, at 2 p.m. She will receive a Doctorate in Business Administration, specializing in Financial Management.
