In Montgomery County, the Primary Election results are still unofficial, but there will be a run off in the sheriff’s race between incumbent Bubba Nix and challenger Jeff Tompkins. The two will face off on Aug. 27, and the winner will move on to face independent candidate Barry Gregg in the General Election on Nov. 5.
In the Sheriff’s race, Nix received 1,140 votes cast in his favor and Tompkins received 1,063 votes cast in his favor. Jamey Mims received 570 votes cast in his favor.
Two more races –Tax Assessor/Collector and District 5 Supervisor -- are too close to call, as of press time Wednesday. As it stands with precinct votes and absentee votes counted, the margin of vote for Tax Assessor and District 5 Supervisor races are just a handful of votes.
The Montgomery County courtroom was crowded as many watched election commissioners and poll workers work diligently, counting boxes as numbers were loaded into a computer and scrolled across a projection screen.
In the latest numbers sent from the Montgomery County Circuit Clerk’s office, the vote count was still incomplete with less than two dozen affidavit votes left to count. When the final numbers are finally released, an update will be updated on www.winonatimes.com.
In the Tax Assessor’s race, Laurie Middleton-Lockett received 1,064. Teresa Nabors Green and Sue Stidham are very close behind Lockett. Green received 573 votes cast in her favor. And Stidham received 569 cast in her favor, a four-vote difference between the two.
Circuit Clerk Lanelle Martin said this morning that with affidavits still being counted, it is possible the race between Green and Stidham could be affected. Even with the unofficial numbers, there will be a runoff election between Lockett and either Green or Stidham, depending on the final count.
The winner of the run-off will go on to face Republican candidate Brad Johnson and independent candidate Monica Turner in the General Election in November.
In the District 5 Supervisor race, Incumbent Janet Roby-Harper received 277 votes and her opponent Ronald White received 280, just three-vote difference between the two.
With around 22 ballots still out, the race is too close to call, as the final result could be affected by the uncounted ballots. Harper or White would need 50 percent of the vote plus one vote to win.
Martin received 1,920 votes to re-elect her as Montgomery County Circuit Clerk. Her opponent Danny Woods received 741 votes cast in his favor with 4 write-ins.
In the County Prosecutor race, Ryan Taylor received 1,488 votes. His opponent Jena J. Hoover received 1,052 votes.
In the District 3 Supervisor race, Incumbent Willie Earl Townsend received 366 votes and his opponent Katrina Craft-Bays received 132 votes. Townsend will face independent candidate Arnie Pittman in the General Election in November.
In the District 2 Supervisor race, Incumbent Edwin Taylor received 408 votes and his opponent Normal Small 155 votes. Taylor will face independent candidate Dr. Louie Harrison in the General Election in November.
In the Constable 1- District 1 race, Incumbent L.C. Smith received 821 votes and his opponent received 422.
In the Constable 2- District 2 race, Incumbent Jerry Dell Bridges received 1,259 votes. He will face independent candidate Bryan Lott in the General Election in November.
