The Winona Board of Aldermen voted to allow baseball tournaments and recreational league games to begin this week.
The board voted on the measure at a special-called meeting Tuesday evening.
A baseball tournament is set to begin tomorrow at the Winona Recreational Park, and recreational league play will begin Monday, June 1.
Spectators are expected to exercise social distancing, and park staff have been instructed to sanitize equipment several times throughout games as well as public restrooms. Also, the sidewalk will be marked to space those in line for the concession stand.
In other business:
• The board hired James Burnett as an officer at the Winona Police Department. Burnett is a certified officer, originally from Clarksdale.
• The board also voted to include the upgrade of the city’s wastewater treatment plant on a grant application for the Economic Development Authority. According to Winona Mayor Jerry Flowers, after meeting with representatives from the federal agency, including the upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant to the city’s current application to construct an elevated water tower near the Highway 82/Interstate 55 interchange will make the city’s application “more attractive” for funding. The grant application will request $3 million in funding to complete the two projects.
