WINONA – The Winona Tiger offense dominated the West Tallahatchie Choctaws Friday night, with a 62-22 thumping in Winona.
Early in the contest, the Choctaws pulled ahead, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter.
However, in the second and until the game’s end, the Tiger offense lit up the scoreboard in an offensive assault against the Choctaws.
“Offensively, I didn’t think they could stop us,” Tiger Head Coach Joey Tompkins said. “The game went how I thought it would go.”
After scoring the two touchdowns in the first, the Choctaws’ lone touchdown came in the third.
Several players accounted for the Tiger’s offensive fire power.
Quarterback JaTyler Moore had four touchdowns on the night – two through the air and two on the ground. In the first quarter, Moore punched one in the end zone on a quarterback keeper. In the second quarter, he found wide receiver Chris Olton on a 15- yard touchdown pass. Just before the half, Moore connected with Jay Lofton in the corner of the end zone.
Running back D.J. Ringo had three touchdowns on the night, cruising into the end zone from three, seven, and 24-yards.
In the third, An’darius Coffey broke wide open scoring on a 66-yard run. The final score came from sophomore Adarion Hargrove who put six more on the board with a short run. Cade Eldridge tacked on the PAT.
On defense, Winona forced four turnovers.
Olton and Coffey both had picks, and the Tigers also scooped up a pair of fumbles. Dorian Curry scooped up one fumble, and an intense goal-line stance led to the Tigers recovering a second loose ball. The Tigers stopped the Choctaws near the goal line -- forcing a fumble by West Tally on a quarterback keeper.
The Tigers had three turnovers of their own in the contest, however, the Choctaws did not capitalize on the two interceptions and a fumble.
Friday, the Tigers (9-3) travel to Forrest to play Scott Central (12-1) in the the third round of the playoffs. Kickoff is at seven.
“[It is a] totally different animal in Scott Central,” said Tompkins.
