Two men have been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred last week in Winona.
Ladaric Fleming and Trayvon Christian went before Judge Alan D. Lancaster Thursday morning in Winona Municipal Court. Fleming has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and Christian has been charged with assessory after the fact.
According to Captain Dan Herod, chief investigator for the Winona Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Academy and Mortimer Street around 1:35 p.m. last Wednesday, January 19. Herod said that officers found a bullet-ridden vehicle that had been struck several times. He said no one was injured in the shooting.
At 2:31 p.m., Wednesday, the Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District posted on their Facebook page reporting that Winona Elementary had briefly been on lockdown as a result of the incident.
“Winona Elementary School locked down briefly while school resource officers and local law enforcement officials checked the area around the school. Students and teachers on the playground reported an unusual sound to the school‘s office staff,” the statement said.
Fleming, who was advised by Lancaster that anything he said could be used against him, told the court that he “weren’t on any violence.” He said he didn’t come to Winona for violence of any sort, and he came to pick something up and left. Lancaster stopped Fleming before he went into any further details.
Herod said Fleming was later found in Oxford at an apartment complex. He said the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department was notified that Fleming was in the area around midnight, and he was taken into police custody soon after.
Fleming said he didn’t flee to Oxford, the intention was for them to go to Oxford the entire time.
Lancaster advised Fleming again that anything he said in court could be used against him and the only person he should talk to is his lawyer. He assigned public defender Lee Bailey to Fleming’s case.
Herod told Lancaster that Fleming was out on bond in connection with another shooting that occurred in August at Muno’s.
“It happened either August or September,” Herod said.
According to an earlier report, the incident happened on August 31. Fleming and a 15-year-old were charged with aggravated assault in the incident and a third man was charged with accessory after the fact.
Fleming also has another charge in Carroll County for a separate matter. In May, Fleming was charged with felony possession of marijuana and contempt of court.
Lancaster set Fleming’s bond at $250,000.
Christian’s bond was set at $5,000, he didn’t say much when Lancaster explained to him that this is his preliminary hearing. According to Herod’s release, he said the investigation determined that Christian was the alleged driver at the time of the alleged shooting.
“We would like to thank the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in this investigation,” Herod said.
