A cold front moving through the area late Saturday night brought high winds and downed trees on Sunday.
“The National Weather Service in Jackson said Carroll County experienced 60 mile per hour winds,” said Ken Strachan, director of the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center (EOC). “They said it was straight line winds and nickel-sized hail.”
The Carroll County EOC received reports of downed trees in various areas in the county, according to Strachan.
“We had reported to the EOC a tree down on County Road 122, which is New Bethel Road,” said Strachan. “There was a tree downed there Sunday morning. Jake Hurst, the fire chief, responded and removed the tree out of the road.”
Strachan said the EOC received a report of a downed tree blocking passage on Mississippi Highway 35 South between Carrollton and Vaiden.
“[Mississippi Department of Transportation] and sheriff’s deputies responded and cleared the road,” said Strachan.
Montgomery County EOC Director Allan Pratt said the operations center received reports of downed trees north and east of Winona.
“We had some around the Eskridge Community, Dividing Ridge Road and Doris Road,” said Pratt. “[The storm] came through Eskridge and went out that way.”
He said the Montgomery County Road Department and Unit System cleared roadways.
Pratt and Strachan said they did not received reports of home damage. However, the Montgomery County EOC did receive a report of damage to the Circle K gas station on Mississippi Highway 82 in Winona, according to Pratt.
“There were a few power outages scattered out in the county,” said Pratt.
None were reported in Carroll County, Strachan said.
Both directors said they did not receive reports of injuries from Sunday’s early morning storm.
“We were just grateful that no one was injured,” said Pratt. “Our office is asking the public to please report any damage or emergencies.”
Funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is determined by the number and severity of reports. Some people who did suffer damage to their homes during Sunday’s storm did not report the damage to the EOC, but they are encouraged to do so.
People who would like to report storm damage or an emergency, should call 911 or the Montgomery County EOC at 662-283-1121 or the Carroll County EOC at 662-237-9319.
