Duck Hill’s recently repaved Lawrence Street is soon to be smooth no longer.
“I wish I had some good news,” City Engineer Joe Sutherland said in a Board of Aldermen meeting on Monday, “but the frost during the Christmas and New Year caused some leaks under the pavement.”
Sutherland went on to say that after the brand new pavement is removed, the pipes, which are rotting to the water main, will have to be replaced with a new service line.
“We’ve got to dig out four more feet of our new asphalt, probably put in a tap to fix the service line,” Sutherland explained, “but what I wanted to ask the board about was when we backfill this, we really need to backfill it with crush and run limestone.”
Sutherland told the board the limestone alone would cost “about $900 for a dump truck load,” not to mention the cost of the service line repairs.
Alderwoman Shernell Brown-Everrett asked when Lawrence Street could be repaved, and Sutherland replied “it’s gonna have to be re-black-topped, and we won’t be able to do it until the spring. That’s why we have to put the limestone in there, so people won’t get stuck.”
“It broke my heart to see what we’re gonna do to the road,” he continued, and several of the alderman agreed that they’d been enjoying the new road.
Alderman Chris Caldwell asked if there was any possibility of receiving county funding, to which Sutherland replied, “they always help us when they can,” and said he intended to reach out.
Sutherland said they were hoping to be done with the repair by next Wednesday.
Alderwoman Cynthia Kountz made a motion to go through with the repairs, and Caldwell seconded the motion, with all voting in favor.
