Sometimes we are dreamers and sometimes we create those visions, and when we are no more dreamers, we become realists. That is just what Marc and Amy Sims have done with their dreams of a place so unique from “just a place”.
Some places ignite our memories and elevate our fantasies of bygone days that brings a comforting smile to our faces and to our hearts.
This nostalgic and while modern place is tucked into the edge of the small town located between the rich, flat Delta lands and the red clay foothills of the scenic square of Kosciusko, Mississippi.
It is aptly named, THE JEFFERSON STREET SOCIAL. The name is appropriately named because this “modern Speak-Easy” claims its prominence on the corners of Jefferson Streets and North Jackson streets. It sits in a place where several businesses laid claim through the years, a drug store, a hamburger joint, an antique shop, and several other businesses. The east side sits on the street that the homefolks once called Beale Street. Our interpretation to that of good times.
The Jefferson is a hidden gem that once you enter you never forget. Upon entering, either from the front doors or the side door where no password is needed, you walk into an intimate atmosphere with dim lighting, plush seating, live entertainment, and glasses clinking as the special crafted drinks and cocktails are being blended by one of the best mixologists, I have found, Guy Jackson-Rae, behind the long mahogany bar. The selection of liqueurs, artisanal spirits of house made infusions makes this more than a place but a ponderance of the past.
The delicious food servings are those that you might expect from a much larger eatery as the head cook is one of the best chefs in the area, Antranette Salllis. She not only prepares some well-known dishes but adds her imagination to the pot to concoct her own specialty recipes and they are most scrumptious.
The Jefferson is more than just a place. It’s an experience that brings the past and the present together in a delightful celebration of life with libations, food, and comradery. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, night out with friends, or just as escape from the ordinary then this is the place where memories are made and shared.
And when you do drop into the Jefferson for a visit look for the host – Marc and Amy Sims.
This is a recipe for one of the favorites of many of the regulars.
THE JEFFERSON MULE – In an ice-filled copper cup, mix 1 ½ ounces of Cathead vodka, ½ fresh squeezed lime juice, 1 ounce of Domaine de Canton, and top with ginger beer.
