Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District III Board member, Dr. Katherine W. Hughes received a promotion in rank at Delta State University (DSU). Dr. Hughes started her teaching career at DSU in the fall of 2018 on the tenured track as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. Upon return this fall 2024 semester, recommendation by the University Tenure and Promotion Committee, the Dean, Chair, Provost, and President has awarded Dr. Hughes both Tenure and Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Nursing.
During her pre-tenure years, Dr. Hughes taught online courses at the graduate level for both the Master of Science in nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs, as well as taught courses in the undergraduate program. At the Master level, the curriculum consisted of education to students in the Family Nurse Practitioner’s track. During this tenure, Dr. Hughes has demonstrated teaching effectiveness through her course evaluation and various nominations for teaching recognition. She was nominated for the Jack Gunn Award, Student Engagement Educator Award, and Emerald of Excellent award.
Dr. Hughes has reached a significant milestone in her academic career, and it reflects the high regard in which her colleagues and peers now holds her. The expertise and leadership provided by her to the nursing department will continue to enrich those around her. Based on her dedication to the university, the nursing discipline, and her colleagues makes her a suitable candidate for advancement. The decision to award tenure was based on the certification of satisfactorily meeting of each criterion set within IHL board policy. Congratulations to Dr. Hughes for this great accomplishment.
