About $2,000 was stolen during a break-in at Winona City Hall earlier this week.
Winona Mayor Aaron Dees said the money was taken from a safe inside the building. However, the assailant left behind all rolled coins that also were in the safe.
Late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, the thief entered the building by causing damage to the back door after failing to enter a window in the building’s kitchen and a window in the mayor’s office, Dees said.
“They entered the back door. No other offices were in disarray,” said Dees. “They made their way down the main hallway to the clerks’ station and broke into the safe.”
He said the safe should have been locked at the time of the theft.
All City Hall employees have been questioned, Dees said, and the break-in case, which has been turned over to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department due to the matter being a city issue, remains under investigation.
No suspects have been identified as of press time on Wednesday.
