We decided to take a chance At least, an educated chance, if you can depend on weather reports.
Gary had planned for us to get away for the long weekend to the Ozarks, and the snow and ice that came in cancelled school the Friday we were going to leave.
He checked the TV weather, the weather on the Internet, and the phone app weather. Gary even called the place we were going to stay to see how the weather looked---all clear, cold, but sunny. The forecast through Monday was the same.
After thinking about it, and after talking it over, we said a prayer and took off. It seemed that the worst weather was going to be right around Memphis, and after that we shouldn’t have any problems. Gary expected road crews to have the interstate drivable.
Sure enough, the ice and snow increased in Memphis and the roads became scarier to me. We decided to get through Memphis, and if the roads and weather didn’t clear up, we would turn around and go back home.
The ice built on the windshield wipers. A sheen of dirty, snowy, sleety, caked stuff made it so hard to see.
We stopped for gas, and Gary checked the wiper fluid which seemed okay. He cleaned off the windshield wipers. The store was out of deicer spray. We got back on the road.
Our visibility was somewhat better.
At our next stop, we decided we better find some deicer spray and some more windshield cleaner antifreeze. He found some rated negative 25.
We sprayed the windshield, cleaned the wipers again, poured in the new windshield cleaner antifreeze, and the results were amazing. We could see.
We kept fiddling with the heat controls and even got the defroster to work right.
Have you ever wished there was a deicer for the heart? Do you know someone whose heart has grown cold over the years; maybe in a relationship with you? Do you know someone whose heart has grown cold toward missions, or the church, or even God?
In Matthew 24, Jesus told his disciples some of the things that would happen as the sign of Christ’s return and the “end of the age.” (4). In verse 12 you will read: “And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.”
I don’t want my love for God to grow cold!
Read Romans 12. In verse 11 we find: “Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord.” Verse 12 says: “When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.”
Let’s be aware when our hearts and love are growing cold. Let’s pray for God to keep our hearts burning brightly even when our society becomes lawless.
If we get blinded by the icy, dirty, slush building up around us, let’s pray for God to help us see Him and His ways clearly.
Serve God, and ask Him for spiritual deicing when you feel yourself growing cold.
