The observance of Veterans Day this week was a reminder of the sacrifices our veterans have made, along with an appreciation for serving our country. This area has always been strong supporters of our military and Veteran’s through the years. This past Monday here in Carroll County at the courthouse in Carrollton was the 2024 Veterans’ Day Ceremony by the Third Arrow Chapter, NSDAR and Michael H. Ball VFW Post 12191. VFW Post Commander Stanley “Sugar” Mullins presented James Cox, 99, of Vaiden, who is a World War II veteran, a flag for appreciation of service. The guest speaker was Lt. Col. Curtis J. Garrette, commander of Camp McCain Training Center. There were also presentations of proclamations and placement of the wreaths in honor and memory of all Carroll County Veterans by the J.Z. George Beta Club and Carroll Academy Student Council. Through the years, educator Elizabeth Wilson has been very instrumental in recognizing the service of our veterans. Veterans have fought for us and given us the freedoms that we have today, one needs to look no further than the right to vote that was exercised earlier this month.
In America’s history, Veterans have been a symbol of safety, freedom, and bravery. They have kept the United States safe by protecting us against our enemies, giving America freedom by standing up for what they believe in, and have shown bravery with serving our country. With this service our Veterans have shaped our nation and given us a country that’s strong.
Veterans Day, which was originally known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans. We are reminded there are challenges that face all Americans including our veterans; and there is a strong alliance to meet these challenges.
As the son of a veteran, I realize there are so many of those who have served our country that deserve respect and compassion. Here in the aftermath of a national election, it’s in our hearts to continue the remembrance and appreciation of those who served.
