Local climbers are looking forward to Duck Hill’s annual mountain climb.
The date for the climb has been set for Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, according to a post on Duck Hill’s group Facebook page.
“This will be the 10th year anniversary,” said Climb Organizer Nannette Laster.
Laster said the tradition started when “Arnold Dyre, who is now deceased, wrote about the hill. He grew up in the area and was familiar with the hill.”
Dyre had not ever climbed but expressed an interest in doing so when Laster and her brother, Larry Laster, began organizing the first climb “for Arnold and anybody else who wanted to climb.”
“Due to health issues, Arnold was only able to climb twice,” Laster said. “[But] we have climbed every year since.”
Laster also stated the number of climbers “has definitely grown, that’s why we climb two different weekends—to try to accommodate people.”
People in the area are encouraged to attend on the set dates “at least 30 minutes before climb time. We will set the time closer to the date, based on temperatures.”
The designated area to meet is Binford School gym and attendees are encouraged to wear hiking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Hiking poles and walking sticks are also encouraged.
Children ages 5 and older are also welcome but must be under adult supervision at all times.
