The Winona Christian School Lady Stars grabbed two big wins last week as they downed Benton 43-24 and Jackson Victors 49-41.
The Stars also grabbed a 56-29 win over Benton in district play while falling 63-48 to the Victors on Friday night.
Winona has a full week of basketball as they were scheduled to host Central Holmes on Monday and then host Oak Hill on Wednesday. On Friday, Winona will travel to Oak Hill for another division contest.
“We’ve got a really big week this week and next for us,” Winona boys coach Keith Ware said. “We’ve got five district games over the next ten days. The three games this week will determine a lot about how the tournament will lay out for us. Wednesday night is Senior night and our last home game. We have a lot to play for.”
The Lady Stars jumped out to an early lead as they cruised to the 43-24 win over the Lady Raiders.
Winona got ahead early as they led 18-6 at the end of the first and 29-6 at the half.
Anna Cole Ware had a huge night as she outscored the Lady Raiders herself, pumping in 26 points with six 3-pointers on the night. Ivey Devine added six points in the win.
The Lady Stars overcame an early deficit to take the 49-41 win over the Lady Victors on Friday night.
Jackson led 13-9 at the end of the first but Winona outscored the Lady Victors 14-9 in the second to lead 23-22 at the half. Winona started to pull away in the second half as they outscored Jackson 13-8 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth for the final margin.
Ware had a game-high 17 points while Sara Beth White and Elise Diffey each had nine points apiece.
Stars
The WCS boys dominated the action early as they raced out to a 28-10 lead and cruised to a 56-29 win over Benton.
Winona led 14-7 at the end of the first and 28-10 at the half. The Stars kept pushing the lead in the second half as they outscored the Raiders 10-5 in the third and 18-14 in the fourth for the final margin.
Latham Hill led Winona with 17 points while Wyatt Chambley added 12 points. Shaw Ferguson had nine points while Reed Roberts and Austin Huggins each had five points apiece.
The Jackson Victors outscored Winona in each of the first three periods and took a 63-48 win over the Stars.
Jackson led 17-11 at the end of the first and 31-21 at the half. The Victors put the game out of reach in the third as they outscored the Stars 15-9 to lead 46-30.
Hill led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, while Ferguson had 10 points. Choyce Diffey had nine points and Roberts added eight.
