Carroll Academy’s magical ride through the Class AA playoffs will go on for another week.
A week after finishing second to Marshall in the district tournament, the Lady Rebels finished second to the Lady Patriots again, falling 34-31 to Marshall in the finals of the Class AA North State tournament on Saturday at Benton Academy.
The Lady Rebels used a 44-42 win over Greenville Christian and a 49-33 win over Greenville St. Joseph to advance to the title game.
The Rebels ended their season with a 45-36 loss to Manchester Academy in the opening round of the North AA Tournament.
The Lady Rebels now advance to the Class AA State Tournament this week at Brookhaven Academy where they were to play the host Lady Cougars on Wednesday in an elimination game on Wednesday. Brookhaven was the regular-season and tournament champions in District 3-AA.
Marshall girls 34, Carroll 31
The Lady Rebels lost for the fourth time this year to the Lady Patriots, who claimed the Class AA North State championship game with a three-point win.
Marshall, the defending Class AA state champions, jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first period and led 14-7 at the end of the half. Marshall outscored Carroll 12-10 in the third to take a 26-17 lead into the fourth. Carroll made it interesting in the fourth, outscoring Marshall 14-8 but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Sandy Rhea Tackett led Carroll with 11 points and five rebounds while Caroline Mumme had nine points. Belle Sanders had five points while Gracie Turner had six rebounds and Kalie Teach had five rebounds.
Turner, Tackett and Mumme were each named to the all-tournament team.
Carroll Academy girls 44, Greenville Christian 42
Carroll used big advantages in the first and third periods to take a two-point win over Greenville Christian in the semifinals of the North AA Tournament on Friday.
Carroll led 17-10 at the end of the first and 25-22 at the half. Carroll outscored Greenville 12-5 in the third to take a 37-27 lead into the fourth. Greenville outscored Carroll 15-7 in the fourth for the final margin.
Sandy Rhea Tackett led Carroll with 13 points and eight rebounds while Caroline Mumme had 10 points and five steals. Gracie Turner had nine points and nine rebounds while Lainey Claire Dunn had eight points and eight rebounds.
Carroll Academy girls 49, Greenville St. Joseph 33
The Lady Rebels used a big second period to cruise by Greenville St. Joe on Tuesday.
Carroll led 10-6 at the end of the first period and then outscored Greenville 17-6 in the second to build a 27-12 halftime lead. The Lady Rebels were able to maintain that advantage in the second half as they outscored St. Joe 15-14 in the third while each team scored seven in the fourth.
Caroline Mumme had a big game with 20 points and seven steals. Sandy Rhea Tackett had 10 points and five steals while Lainey Claire Dunn had 10 points. Gracie Turner also pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Rebels on the boards.
Manchester boys 45, Carroll 36
The Mavericks ended the Rebels’ season in the opening round of the North AA Tournament on Wednesday.
Carroll led 7-4 at the end of the first before Manchester used a 16-11 advantage to take a 20-18 lead at the half. The Rebels fought back in the third as they outscored the Mavericks 12-8 to take a 30-28 lead into the fourth. But Manchester pulled away in the fourth as they outscored Carroll 17-6 to take the win.
Reese Fulton led Carroll with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Michael O’Brien added 10 points. Logan Taylor also chipped in five points.
