When children are in the third, fourth and fifth grades, they’re really starting to figure out what they want to do in life. At Marshall Elementary, an ambitious group of third through fifth graders are getting a first-hand glimpse into their possible future careers.
Latravion Peeples, Joshua Fleming, Jonathan Jimenez, Sebastian Wells, Alaysha Bouldon, and Joanna Rone are the new newscast team at Marshall Elementary News.
The group, along with Dr. Fletcher Harges presented their newscast to the board Thursday night at the J.Z. George Band Hall. The students spoke with teachers about teaching strategies and what teachers are doing to prepare their students for their upcoming test.
Teachers broke down how they used iReady, Study Island, and other techniques such as simplistic form and the butterfly method.
Harges said they instill in their students that they are great and use the slogan “The Greatest School in the World” as a motivational tool.
“You heard ‘The Greatest School in the World’ throughout the video because it is. Marshall is the greatest school in the world, and we tell our students that all the time,” he said.
With the Third Grade Reading Gate assessment, students must past their state test in order to move to the fourth grade. It can be a lot for a student to handle, but Marshall is finding ways to do it with ease all while teaching their children new techniques.
“The students did this all themselves,” Harges said. “They came up with it, they ran the camera. This is something that they wanted to do.”
Harges said when the idea was presented to him he was on board with it. He said each student had a different job that they did throughout the filming of the newscast. “You saw everyone else but you didn’t see Jonathan a whole lot because he was the one working the camera.”
He said Marshall performed well on their state test and he believes that they are on their way to increasing their scores even more.
Before ending, he reminded the board that what they do affect the students.
“We should keep that in mind that it’s about them, we should never lose sight of that,” he said.

Marshall gets new J Touch Boards

Third Grade Students, Marshall Elementary School.
The third-grade students at Marshall Elementary School, “The Greatest School in The World,” have two new InFocus JTouch interactive display boards. We are really enjoying them! Today, we learned about point of view and fact and opinion.
We had a lesson about keeping hedgehogs as pets. David Goss used the computer to run the monitor. Diamond Lott and Latravious Peeples led the class in the lesson with the JTouch. We like our JTouch boards, and we hope to use them more and more. We would like to thank Mr. Claude Fluker for putting the JTouch boards up on the wall and Mr. Charlie Hill for connecting them.
We also thank the Carroll County School District, Mr. Billy Joe Ferguson, Dr. Fletcher Harges, and Mrs. Sara Johnson for making these JTouch boards happen for us. Always remember to be kind to others because giving will come back to you.
